Cultural highlights
Our culture is a precious gift
Culture in all forms is well provided for. In
fact, our cultural heritage is being cared for by authorities and
a surprising number of private and semi-official institutions to
keep and maintain the high level of culture in the BASE region.
Initiatives to make cultural events accessible to publics also outside
the larger cities are common, and local art, folk music etc. is
flourishing in the area.
Music, Maestro, please!
The newly erected cobalt-blue (!) concert hall
in Gävle is the residence of one of Sweden's professional concert
orchestras. The music performed covers everything from classical
music to popular tunes. Visit the concert hall's outstanding music
library or order a coffee or a light meal in the restaurant, from
where you can enjoy one of the city's most beautiful sceneries.
Jazz and chamber music festivals, folk music and
country and western festivals and a lot of other events are common
features in small as well as large cities and villages in the region.
Museums mirror our past, present and future
You will find a vast spectrum of museums in the
area, ranging from local, regional-history museums to the large
city collections portraying the region's many aspects of our cultural
heritage.
Art and handicraft, rural life and glass, pre-historical
times and trains! Now there is a mix which would be a challenge
to the most sophisticated museum visitor.
Famous artist Gunnar Cyrén, a native of
Gävle, has created the Nobel Prize dinner set for the institution's
90th anniversary, for example. This exquisite piece of art is displayed
at the county museum.
The smörgåsbord
is but one of the dishes Sweden is famous for.
With its unlimited variety of different things to eat, this unique
idea of a solid meal will satisfy the most demanding customer. Swedish
food is in fact delicious, try one or more of the many fish dishes
available in bistros and restaurants. Smoked herring is a delicacy
available from local fishermen in the region.
